Fix Grass Affected By Brown Patch

LawnSafe can help you fix grass problems and ensure that your lawn stays in immaculate condition throughout the year through our maintenance program. One of the problems often experienced by homeowners is that of “brown patch”, a condition in which soil based fungus attacks grass types such as Bent, St. Augustine, Rye and Bermuda grass in areas with lots of shade or humidity.

If your lawn shows symptoms of brown patch simply contact us to help you fix grass problems. If left untreated, it can destroy large patches of grass, leaving your lawn in poor condition.

The main symptoms of brown patch are circular brown patches with yellow edges around the patches. Test whether it is brown patch by pulling the leaves of the grass. If the leaves can be pulled off without effort, it should be an indication of brown patch. The disease attacks the tissue at the base of the grass blades. In the beginning stages of the disease, you will notice round patches of dark water saturated grass which then begins to turn lighter and eventually brown. You may also find new green blades that emerge at the centre of the brown patches.

To fix grass affected by brown patch, strict fertilizing regimes must be followed. It is essential to apply the right amount of nitrogen to help fight off the disease. The grass must also be watered early in the day as this will help to remove the excess dew left on the grass ensuring that the grass can become dry again sooner. If the condition is present, you should mow the lawn with a sharper blade and set the height a bit higher. Always remove the clippings to prevent spreading of the disease and to ensure that the grass can become dry again.

Fungicides can be applied to prevent the disease and fix the grass, but once it has taken root, it is more difficult to fix grass through the application of fungicides. As long as the above measures are taken and the conditions for fungus growth controlled, the grass will return to normal. If however, there are secondary conditions, the disease can once again spread.
