Things you can do to ensure green grass throughout the year

Watering should be done to keep the soil moist. It is however, important to ensure that good drainage exists. Some indications of a lawn that needs watering are when the footprints on the lawn are visible for a while, when the grass gets a blue tint, and there is resistance when pushing a screwdriver into the soil. It is best to water the lawn early morning or evening when the conditions are cool and calm. This will ensure deeper penetration of the water into the soil.

Don’t over water. If the sprinkler system delivers water faster than the soil can absorb, simply pause the system for a while. You will see pools of water on the grass if it is the case. If you have planted grass, you need to keep the soil moist through a thin spray several times a day as needed. As the lawn grows, you can start to reduce the watering. This is normally the case after about six weeks. If you went the sod route, you will need to keep the lawn soaked for the first two weeks.

Mowing of the lawn should be done with sharp blades and it should be done frequently. It should be noted that you should never cut the grass blades more than one third of their length. Back to blades – sharp blades will prevent harm to the grass and thus reduce the risk of weeds and pests in the lawn. The shorter you mow, the more pesticides you will need to keep the pests under control.
